One Number to Ring Them All

If Google search revolutionized the Web, and Gmail revolutionized free e-mail, then one thing’s for sure: Google Voice, unveiled Thursday, will revolutionize telephones.

It unifies your phone numbers, transcribes your voice mail, blocks telemarketers and elevates text messages to first-class communication citizens. And that’s just the warm-up.

Google Voice began life in 2005 as something called GrandCentral. It was, in its own way, revolutionary.

It was intended to solve the headaches of having more than one phone number (home, work, cellphone and so on): Having to check multiple answering machines. Missing calls when people try to reach you on your cell when you’re at home (or the other way around). Sending around e-mail at work that says, “On Thursday from 5 to 8:30, I’ll be on my cell; for the rest of the weekend, call me at home.” And having to change phone numbers when you switched jobs or cities.

GrandCentral’s solution was to offer you a new, single, unified phone number, in an area code of your choice. Whenever somebody dialed your uni-number, all of your phones rang at once.

No longer did people have to track you down by dialing multiple numbers; no matter where you were, your uni-number found you. And all voice mail messages landed in a single voice mail box, on the Web. (You could also dial in to hear them as usual.)

On the Web, you could play back your messages or even download them as audio files to preserve for posterity. You could even ask to be notified of new voice mail by e-mail.

But wait, there was more. Each time you answered a call, while the caller was still hearing “one ringy-dingy, two ringy-dingies,” you heard a recording offering four ways to handle the call: “Press 1 to accept, 2 to send to voice mail, 3 to listen in on voice mail, or 4 to accept and record the call.” If you pressed 3, the call went directly to voice mail, but you could listen in. If you felt that the caller deserved your immediate attention, you could press * to pick up and join the call. This subtle feature saved time, conserved cellular minutes and, in certain cases, avoided a great deal of interpersonal conflict.

GrandCentral also let you record a different voice mail greeting for each person in your address book: “Hey, dollface, leave me a sweet nothing” for your love interest, “Hi, boss, I’m out making us both some money” for your employer.

You could also specify which phones would ring when certain people called. (For the really annoying people in your life, you could even tell GrandCentral to answer with the classic, three-tone “The number you have dialed is no longer in service” message.)

Also very cool: Any time during a call, you could press the * key to make all of your phones ring again, so that you could pick up on a different phone in midcall. If you were heading out the door, you could switch a landline call to your cellphone.

GrandCentral also offered telemarketing spam filters, off-hour call blocking (“never ring my BlackBerry on weekends”), and a dizzying number of other functions. For people with complicated lives, GrandCentral was a breath of fresh air. It felt like a secret power that nobody else had.

Then, in 2007, Google bought GrandCentral. It stopped accepting new members, ceased any visible work on it, and, apparently, forgot about it completely. The early adopters, several hundred thousand of them, were able to keep using GrandCentral’s features. But as time went on, their hearts sank. In January, Salon.com summed it up in an editorial called, “Will the Last One to Leave GrandCentral Please Turn Out the Lights?”

As it turns out, the joke was on them. Google was quietly working on GrandCentral all along. Starting Thursday, existing GrandCentral members can upgrade to Google Voice. In a few weeks, after debugging the system, Google will open the service to all.

Google Voice starts with a clean, redesigned Web site that looks like an in-box, à la Gmail. It maintains all of those original GrandCentral features — but more important, introduces four game-changing new ones.

FREE VOICE MAIL TRANSCRIPTIONS From now on, you don’t have to listen to your messages in order; you don’t have to listen to them at all. In seconds, these recordings are converted into typed text. They show up as e-mail messages or text messages on your cellphone.

This is huge. It means that you can search, sort, save, forward, copy and paste voice mail messages.

No human effort is involved; it’s all done with software. As a result, the transcriptions are rarely perfect. For one thing, Google’s software doesn’t seem to have discovered punctuation yet. (“ohh hi it’s michelle i just wanted to let you know that i really had fun last night and it’s really great to see you okay talk to you later bye bye.”)

There are errors, of course; it’s hard enough for people to understand cellphone conversations, let alone computers. Cleverly enough, the Web site displays transcribed words more faintly (light gray) when it is less confident about the transcription. Fortunately, it generally nails numbers — phone numbers, arrival times, addresses. And the rest is accurate enough to convey the gist.

Companies like PhoneTag, Callwave and Spinvox already transcribe voice mail, complete with punctuation. They’re great, but they cost money. Google Voice is free.

FREE CONFERENCE CALLING Never again will you pay for a conference call, or require a special dial-in number, or mess around with access codes. All you do is tell your friends to call your GrandCentral at the specified time — and boom, you can conference them in as they call you. No charge.

DIRT-CHEAP INTERNATIONAL CALLS If you dial your own Google Voice number from one of your phones, you’re offered an option to call overseas at rates even lower than Skype’s (and much lower than your cellphone company’s): 2 cents a minute to France or China, 3 cents to Chile or the Czech Republic. Sweet.

TEXT MESSAGE ORGANIZATION Google Voice’s last feature is its most profound. The old GrandCentral wasn’t great with text messages sent to your uni-number. In fact, it ignored them. They just disappeared.

Google Voice, however, does the right thing: it sends text messages to whichever cellphones you want — even multiple phones simultaneously.

Even more important, it collects them in your Web in-box just like e-mail. You can file them, search them and, for the first time in cellphone history, keep them. They don’t vanish forever once your cellphone gets full.

You can also reply to them with a click, either with a call or another text; your back-and-forths appear online as a conversation.

Google Voice eliminates some of the annoyances of its predecessor. You can, if you wish, turn off that “press 1, press 2” option, so when the phone rings, you can just pick it up and start talking. Google has also done some Googlish integration; for example, your Gmail and Google Voice address books are the same.

Nitpicks? Sure. The service has vastly beefed up its selection of available uni-numbers, but there are still some area codes you can’t get (212 is especially rare). As a side effect of Google Voice’s ring-all-phones-at-once technology, you sometimes find fragments of Google Voice error recordings on the answering machines of the phones you didn’t answer. (Solution: make your voice mail greeting at least 15 seconds long.) There’s a learning curve to all of this, too.

Still, you can’t imagine how much the game changes when you have a single phone number, voice mail transcriptions and nondeleting text messages on every phone. Suddenly, your communications are not only unified, but they’re unified everywhere at once — the cellphone, the Web and the e-mail program. And all of it free — even ad-free.

There may be some fallout as a result; I’d hate to be a company that sells voice mail transcription or conferencing calling services right about now. But that’s life, right? Every now and then, a little revolution is good for us.

Hack the Windows Explorer Shortcut Menu

The right-click menu in Windows Explorer is quite useful; right-click a file and a menu appears, letting you take a variety of actions, such as opening the file, printing it, deleting it, copying it, creating a shortcut to it, and so on. Figure 1 shows you the screen you'll see. (Note that the "Scan with…" option is only available if you install antivirus software, such as avast! Anti-virus.)

But there's a way to power up the menu. Hold down the Shift key as you right-click a file, and you get several new menu options, as you can see circled in Figure 2.

Here's what the options do:

* Open as Read-Only: As the name says, it opens the file as a read-only file.
* Pin to Start Menu: This pins a shortcut to the file in the top section of the Start menu. To remove the shortcut to the file from the Start menu, right-click the shortcut and select "Remove from this list."
* Add to Quick Launch: This adds a shortcut to the file to the Quick Launch toolbar, on the left side of the Taskbar. To remove the shortcut, right-click it and choose Delete.
* Copy as Path: This copies the file name and path to the Windows clipboard, for example, C:\Budget\2007 memo.xls. You can then paste the text wherever you want.

On Monday morning, Nov 19, 2007 just 12 miles west of Amarillo, we were pulling up Rowley hill, going 15 Mph & the wind was blowing about 50 mph & we ran into thousand's of Tumbleweeds come to a dead stop in about 5 car length's, they blew under Our Drivers & we lost all our traction & were dead in the water.

We had 3 Engines & got 2 more engines off another train & Still couldn't move. We were stuck there for 5 hrs & 35 min. & finally Had to Back down the hill & let another crew take over because we ran out of Time To work, crazy huh?

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,

AMERICAN SUICIDE

If you read anything today, read this.

Wherever you stand, please take the time to
read this; it ought to scare the pants off you!

We know Dick Lamm as the former Governor of Colorado (Democrat). In that context his thoughts
are particularly poignant. Recently there was an immigration overpopulation conference in Washington,
DC, filled to capacity by many of America's finest minds and leaders. A brilliant college professor by
the name of Victor Davis Hansen talked about his latest book, "Mexifornia," explaining how
immigration - both legal and illegal was destroying the entire state of California He said it would
march across the country until it destroyed all vestiges of The American Dream.

Moments later, former Colorado Governor Richard D. Lamm stood up and gave a stunning speech
on how to destroy America. The audience sat spellbound as he described eight methods for the
destruction of the United States. He said, "If you believe that America is too smug, too
self-satisfied, too rich, then let's destroy America. It is not that hard to do. No nation in
history has survived the ravages of time. Arnold Toynbee observed that all great civilizations rise
and fall and that 'An autopsy of history would show that all great nations commit suicide.'"

"Here is how they do it," Lamm said: "First, to destroy America, turn America into a bilingual or
multi-lingual and bicultural country." History shows tha! t no nat ion can survive the tension, conflict,
and antagonism of two or more competing languages and cultures It is a blessing for an individual to
be bilingual; however, it is a curse for a society to be bilingual. The historical scholar, Seymour
Lipset, put it this way: "The histories of bilingual and bi-cultural societies that do not assimilate are
histories of turmoil, tension, and tragedy." Canada, Belgium, Malaysia, and Lebanon all face crises of
national existence in which minorities press for autonomy, if not independence. Pakistan and Cyprus
have divided. Nigeria suppressed an ethnic rebellion. France faces difficult times with Basques, Bretons, and Corsicans."

Lamm went on: Second, to destroy America, "Invent 'multiculturalism' and encourage immigrants
to maintain their culture. Make it an article of belief that all cultures are equal. That there are
no cultural differences. Make it an article of faith that the Black and Hispanic dropout rates are due
solely to prejudice and discrimination by the majority. Every other explanation is out of bounds.

Third, "We could make the United States an 'Hispanic Quebec' without much effort. The key is to
celebrate diversity rather than unity. As Benjamin Schwarz said in the Atlantic Monthly recently: "The
apparent success of our own multiethnic and multicultural experiment might have been achieved
not by tolerance but by hegemony. Without the dominance that once dictated ethnocentricity and
what it meant to be an American, we are left with only tolerance and pluralism to hold us together."
Lamm said, "I would encourage all immigrants to keep their own language and culture. I would! replace the
melting pot metaphor with the salad bowl metaphor. It is important to ensure that we have various
cultural subgroups living in America enforcing their differences rather than as Americans, emphasizing
their similarities."

"Fourth, I would make our fastest growing demographic group the least educated. I would add a
second underclass, unassimilated, undereducated, and antagonistic to our population. I would have this
second underclass have a 50% dropout rate from high school."

"My fifth point for destroying America would be to get big foundations and business to give these
efforts lots of money. I would invest in ethnic identity, and I would establish the cult of
'Victimology.' I would get all minorities to think that their lack of success was the fault of the
majority. I would start a grievance industry blaming all minority failure on the majority population."

"My sixth plan for America's downfall would include dual citizenship, and promote divided
loyalties I would celebrate diversity over unity. I would stress differences rather than similarities.
Diverse people worldwide are mostly engaged in hating each other- that is, when they are not
killing each other. A diverse, peaceful, or stable society is against most historical precedent. People
undervalue the unity it takes to keep a nation together. Look at the ancient Greeks. The Greeks
believed that they belonged to the same race; they possessed a common Language and literature; and they
worshipped the same Gods. All Greece took part in the Olympic games. A common enemy, Persia,
threatened their liberty. ! Yet all these bonds were not strong enough to overcome two factors: local
patriotism and geographical conditions that nurtured political divisions. Greece fell. "E. Pluribus Unum"
-- from many, one. In that historical reality, if we put the emphasis on the 'Pluribus' instead of the
'Unum,' we will balkanize America assuredly as Kosovo."

"Next to last, I would place all subjects off limits; make it taboo to talk about anything
against the cult of 'diversity.' I would find a word similar to 'heretic' in the 16th century - that
stopped discussion and paralyzed thinking. Words like 'racist' or 'xenophobe' halt discussion and

proceeding methodically, quietly, da! rkly, yet pervasively across the United States today.
Discussion is being suppressed. Over 100 languages are ripping the foundation of our educational system
and national cohesiveness. Even barbaric cultures that practice female genital mutilation are growing
as we celebrate 'diversity.' American jobs are vanishing into the Third World as corporations
create a Third World in America - take note of California and other states - to date, ten million
illegal aliens and growing fast. It is reminiscent of George Orwell's book "1984." In that story,
three slogans are engraved in the Ministry of Truth building: "War is peace," "Freedom is slavery," and
"Ignorance is strength."

Governor Lamm walked back to his seat. It dawned on everyone at the conference that our nation
and the future of this great democracy is deeply in trouble and worsening fast. If we don't get this
immigration monster stopped within three years, it will rage like a California wildfire and destroy
everything in its path especially The American Dream. If you care for and love our country as I
do, take the time to pass this on just as I did for you.

NOTHING is exactly what will happen if you don't!

Democracy and Islam cannot co-exist. Every Muslim government is either dictatorial or autocraticSpiritually - no. Because when we declare "one nation under God," the Christian's God is loving and kind, while Allah is NEVER referred to as heavenly father, nor is he ever called love in The Quran's 99 excellent names.
Therefore after much study and deliberation....perhaps we should be very suspicious of ALL MUSLIMS in this country. They obviously cannot be both "good" Muslims and good Americans.Call it what you wish....it's still the truth.If you find yourself intellectually in agreement with the above statements, perhaps you will share this with your friends. 1. I had a New Hampshire Congresswoman ask for an aisle seat so that her hair wouldn't get messed up by being near the window.

2. I got a call from a candidate's staffer, who wanted to go to Capetown. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Web surfers may soon be able to explore the canyons of Mars and experience a virtual flight over the surface of the moon thanks to a deal announced on Monday between Web search company Google Inc.(GOOG.O: Quote, Profile , Research) and the NASA Ames Research Center.
The Space Act Agreement is the first in a series of collaborations between the Mountain View, California-based Internet company and the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
NASA and Google said they will work together on a wide range of technical problems and will make NASA's space exploration work, much of which is currently scattered across the Web, more accessible to the public.
One project would let viewers see details of Mars and Earth's moon in a format similar to satellite picture views of the world made popular by applications such as Google Earth.
Eventually, they aim to offer real-time weather visualization and forecasting, high-resolution 3-D maps of the moon and Mars and real-time tracking of the International Space Station and the space shuttle from the screen of any computer with Internet access, they said in a statement.
Google and NASA first partnered last year to build a new campus at NASA's research center in Silicon Valley. The deal called for Google to develop up to 1 million square feet (93,000 square meter) of real estate within the Moffett Field research park.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Supersonic Combustion for a Hypersonic Space Plane; Discovery Could Enable Two-Hour Flights From DC to AustraliaMaryland Technology Enterprise Institute (MTECH)Dec 28, 2006 - 5:33:44 AM
COLLEGE PARK, Md: Here’s the promise: two-hour flights from anywhere to the other side of the world, replete with 30 minutes of Space Shuttle-like views while in orbit.
The problem: how to mix fuel in the engine of an efficient, hypersonic space plane invented by Astrox Corporation that travels as fast as Mach 25, or 17,500 miles-per-hour, above the Earth’s atmosphere.
The answer: Through two Maryland Industrial Partnerships Program projects, A. James Clark School of Engineering faculty members Ashwani Gupta and Kenneth Yu, along with graduate student Ram Balar, have successfully designed and tested a combustor for the Astrox space plane, which uses something called an inward-turning scramjet engine.
“Hypersonic space planes could revolutionize the transportation industry, much like jet planes did for subsonic commercial aviation 50 years ago,” said Astrox President Ajay Kothari. “Seemingly remote parts of the world would be nearly as accessible as a two-hour drive.”
Vertical takeoff version of the same hypersonic space plane. (click for larger image) Mechanical engines don’t work at hypersonic speeds. Moving parts simply cannot work at 3,500-7,500 miles-per-hour, or 5-10 times faster than the speed of sound, according to Kothari.

Instead, hypersonic jet engines typically employ rectangular, duct-like engines with no moving parts, also called scramjets. Air enters the engine inlet at hypersonic speeds and is compressed to supersonic speeds, after which it is mixed with fuel and ignited. The air leaves the engine traveling faster and at a higher pressure than when it came in—creating thrust.
But the large surface areas created by rectangular designs generate tremendous heat transfer into a vehicle, requiring extra fuel loads just to cool areas around the engine chamber. “Not only are the large surface areas inefficient, but the extra fuel also adds significant volume and weight to the aircraft,” said Kothari, who holds a patent on an inward-turning vehicle design. “Single-stage-to-orbit travel utilizing a rectangular-shaped engine design would be difficult.”
Kothari’s engine is shaped like a funnel, where air comes in through a circular opening, increases in pressure as it passes through, then leaves with more thrust and less heating than through a rectangular design. The challenge is injecting fuel into the fast-moving air efficiently as it travels through the engine.
“Roughly speaking, you’re looking at the air flow traveling 1,000 meters-per-second inside the combustor,” said Yu. “The combustor is a meter long, so you have one millisecond for everything to happen—not just the fuel and air mixing—but the burning as well.

(click for larger image) “The combustion is fast, so that’s not the problem,” explained Yu, “but before combustion can occur, you have to mix your fuel with the air quickly. This is more difficult when the air’s traveling at such high speeds.”
Kothari, Gupta, Yu and Balar designed an injector resembling a small, aerodynamic wing, which enters the engine at an angle in the same direction the air is flowing. Fuel is injected just at the wake where the air crosses the wing-shaped injector.
“You have to inject the fuel in the same direction as the air is traveling,” said Gupta. “That’s where the novelty comes in, as it gives you both high thrust and good mixing.”
The research team has tested the combustor at Mach 2, twice the speed of sound, in the university’s supersonic wind tunnel.
Kothari plans to test both his design and the combustor in a small, model space plane.
Astrox will market its vehicle design initially for military use, both as a stand-alone plane and as a weapons delivery system.
Eventually, Kothari envisions consumer planes taking off horizontally from large airports and reducing 20-hour flights to as little as 1.5 hours.
Kothari and the MIPS team have published three academic papers on their combustor design, while Astrox has published 25 papers on hypersonic vehicles.
Founded in 1988, the company has won $5 million in contracts from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration—including three Small Business Innovation Research grants to design hypersonic airplanes and rockets.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Preparations are on schedule for NASA's first nighttime space shuttle launch in four years as the space agency readies Discovery for a mission to the international space station, managers said today.
NASA plans to launch Discovery at 8:35 p.m. CST on Dec. 7 for the third shuttle flight of the year and the fourth since the Columbia disaster killed seven astronauts in 2003.
The agency required the three launches after the Columbia accident to be in daylight so clear images could be taken of the shuttle's external fuel tank in case foam falls off. Foam breaking off the tank and striking Columbia's wing at liftoff caused the damage that led to the disaster.
"There were really no dissenting opinions on the night launch," said Bill Gerstenmaier, NASA's associate administrator.
The space agency needs to start launching shuttles at night to take advantage of more launch opportunities and finish space station construction by 2010, when the shuttle program ends. The external tanks had acceptable levels of foam loss during the last two liftoffs, officials said.
During the launch, NASA managers believe radar will be sufficient to spot any pieces falling from Discovery's tank and that two in-flight inspections would detect any damage.
NASA engineers feel they have learned so much about the foam that the space agency has reduced the risk of the external tank from "catastrophic probable" to a "strong hazard," said Wayne Hale, shuttle program manager.
"It's not nearly as bad as we thought it was because we now know more — through the use of cameras and the other sensors we have flown — about how foam comes off or doesn't come off the tank," Hale said.
In Houston, engineers evaluated a potential problem with a power source for an enormous joint that rotates solar arrays at the space station. A circuit breaker opened this week during a software test on the device, which ensures that the panels follow the sun to provide electricity.
During Discovery's visit to the space station, half of the outpost's U.S. segment will be powered down for two spacewalks while shuttle astronauts rewire it. NASA officials want to make sure the rotary joint's two power sources are working at that time.
Asked whether the problem could delay the launch, Gerstenmaier said: "I don't know ... There are lots of things that need to be analyzed."
Another problem popped up today when a thruster used to boost the space station to a higher altitude so it can more easily dock with the shuttle stopped working after two minutes. Another attempt to boost the space station will be made Friday.
If the launch does not happen on Dec. 7, NASA can keep trying through Dec. 17. After that, the agency will re-evaluate its options and might call it quits until mid-January.
NASA wants Discovery back from its 12-day mission by New Year's Eve because shuttle computers are not designed to make the change from the 365th day of the old year to the first day of the new year while in flight.
The space agency has figured out a solution for the New Year's problem, but managers are reluctant to try it since it has not been thoroughly tested. If the space shuttle is not back on the ground during the change into the new year, NASA officials want it docked to the space station and not flying.

How Can Someone Who Lives in Insane Luxury Be a Star in Today's World?
As I begin to write this, I "slug" it, as we writers say, which means Iput a heading on top of the document to identify it. This heading is"FINAL," and it gives me a shiver to write it. I have been doing thiscolumn for so long that I cannot even recall when I started. I lovedwriting this column so much for so long I came to believe it would neverend. It worked well for a long time, but gradually, my changing as aperson and the world's change have overtaken it.
On a small scale, Morton's [famous restaurant which was often frequentedby Hollywood stars], while better than ever, no longer attracts as manystars as it used to. It still brings in the rich people in droves anddefinitely some stars. I saw Samuel L. Jackson there a few days ago, andwe had a nice visit, and right before that, I saw and had a splendidtalk with Warren Beatty in an elevator, in which we agreed that Splendorin the Grass was a super movie. But Morton's is not the star galaxy itonce was, though it probably will be again.
Beyond that, a bigger change has happened. I no longer think Hollywoodstars are terribly important. They are uniformly pleasant, friendlypeople, and they treat me better than I deserve to be treated. But a manor woman who makes a huge wage for memorizing lines and reciting them infront of a camera is no longer my idea of a shining star we should alllook up to.
How can a man or woman who makes an eight-figure wage and lives ininsane luxury really be a star in today's world, if by a "star" we meansomeone bright and powerful and attractive as a role model? Real starsare not riding around in the backs of limousines or in Porsches orgetting trained in yoga or Pilates and eating only raw fruit while theyhave Vietnamese girls do their nails. They can be interesting, nicepeople, but they are not heroes to me any longer.
A real star is the soldier of the 4th Infantry Division who poked hishead into a hole on a farm near Tikrit, Iraq. He could have been met bya bomb or a hail of AK-47 bullets. Instead, he faced an abject SaddamHussein and the gratitude of all of the decent people of the world. Areal star is the U.S. soldier who was sent to disarm a bomb next to aroad north of Baghdad. He approached it, and the bomb went off andkilled him.. A real star, the kind who haunts my memory night and day,is the U.S. soldier in Baghdad who saw a little girl playing with apiece of unexploded ordnance on a street near where he was guarding astation. He pushed her aside and threw himself on it just as itexploded. He left a family desolate in California and a little girlalive in Baghdad.
The stars who deserve media attention are not the ones who have lavishweddings on TV but the ones who patrol the streets of Mosul even aftertwo of their buddies were murdered and their bodies battered andstripped for the sin of trying to protect Iraqis from terrorists. We putcouples with incomes of $100 million a year on the covers of ourmagazines.
The noncoms and officers who barely scrape by on military pay but standon guard in Afghanistan and Iraq and on ships and in submarines and nearthe Arctic Circle are anonymous as they live and die.
I am no longer comfortable being a part of the system that has such poorvalues, and I do not want to perpetuate those values by pretending thatwho is eating at Morton's is a big subject. There are plenty of otherstars in the American firmament....the policemen and women who go off onpatrol in South Central and have no idea if they will return alive. Theorderlies and paramedics who bring in people who have been in terribleaccidents and prepare them for surgery, the teachers and nurses whothrow their whole spirits into caring for autistic children, the kindmen and women who work in hospices and in cancer wards. Think of eachand every fireman who was running up the stairs at the World TradeCenter as the towers began to collapse.
Now you have my idea of a real hero. We are not responsible for theoperation of the universe, and what happens to us is not terriblyimportant.
God is real, not a fiction, and when we turn over our lives to Him, hetakes far better care of us than we could ever do for ourselves. In aword, we make ourselves sane when we fire ourselves as the directors ofthe movie of our lives and turn the power over to Him.
I came to realize that life lived to help others is the only one thatmatters. This is my highest and best use as a human. I can put itanother way. Years ago, I realized I could never be as great an actor asOlivier or as good a comic as Steve Martin--or Martin Mull or FredWillard--or as good an economist as Samuelson or Friedman, or as good awriter as Fitzgerald. Or even remotely close to any of them. But I couldbe a devoted father to my son, husband to my wife and, above all, a goodson to the parents who had done so much for me. This came to be my maintask in life. I did it moderately well with my son, pretty well with mywife and well indeed with my parents (with my sister's help). I caredfor and paid attention to them in their declining years. I stayed withmy father as he got sick, went into extremis, into a coma, and thenentered immortality with my sister and me reading him the Psalms.
This was the only point at which my life touched the lives of thesoldiers in Iraq or the firefighters in New York. I came to realize thatlife lived to help others is the only one that matters and that it is myduty, in return for the lavish life God has devolved upon me, to helpothers He has placed in my path. This is my highest and best use as ahuman.

Marine Corps Rules for Gun Fighting

1. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns.
2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Life is expensive.
3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.
4. If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough nor using cover correctly.

Free Radon Test Kits Available to Texans

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is offering Texans free kits to test for radon levels in their homes.

Radon is an odorless colorless gas that develops with the natural breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. The gas can come up from the soil and into a home or building through pipes, drains, cracks in the foundation or other openings.

If radon is inhaled over a long period of time, it can increase the risk of lung cancer, according to Kay Soper, DSHS environmental specialist.

“Radon isn’t a big problem in Texas, but it’s important to know if radon is present at harmful levels in your home. That’s why we’re offering the free kits,” Soper said. “It’s very easy to test for radon, and if a high level is found, it can be reduced with proper ventilation.”

Test kits can be ordered by calling 1-800-293-0753 or by e-mailing radon@dshs.state.tx.us. The radon test kit includes a small charcoal-filled plastic case, detailed instructions and a postage-paid envelope.

The plastic case is placed in the home for two days and then sent to Alpha Energy Laboratories for a free analysis. Results are usually available within two to three weeks.

According to United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards, most Texas homes are located in areas of “low potential” for elevated radon levels. But 39 out of Texas’ 254 counties have a “moderate potential” rating. Most of these counties are in West and Northwest Texas. No Texas counties fall in the EPA’s “highest potential” category.

Hot Spinach Dip

2 (10 oz) packages frozen chopped spinach, thawed
2 (8 oz) packages cream cheese, softened
2 cups (8 oz) shredded Monterey Jack cheese
1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1 small onion, chopped
1 (14 oz) can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped
2 (10 oz) cans diced tomatoes and green chilies, drained
2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 tsp chili powder
1 tsp garlic powder

☺ Drain spinach; press between layers of paper towels to remove excess moisture.
☺ Combine spinach, cream cheese, and remaining ingredients, stirring well. Spoon mixture into a greased 2 ½ quart baking dish. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until bubbly.

Serve with Melba toast rounds or corn chips Yield: 8 cups.

Creamy Crab and Artichoke Dip

1- 8 oz package cream cheese
1 cup mayonnaise
1 large (13 oz) can artichoke hearts-drained and chopped
1/3 cup minced fresh onion
¾ cup shredded parmesan
2 cans crab meat- drained (may substitute 1 pkg frozen chopped spinach for crab)

Cream together: cream cheese and mayonnaise, add remaining ingredients Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.
